2. Division of Cattle; 1 Jun 1627; Plymouth Colony, MA 4. Number 10 in the fourth lot for the division of cattle. This group received "one of the 4 heyfers Came in the Jacob Called Raghorne."

3. Removal; Bef 6 Feb 1630/31; Massachusetts Bay Colony, MA 5. Mentioned in the letter from William Bradford, Governor of Plymouth Bay Colony, to John Winthrop, the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony: "Now ther are diverce goone from hence, to dwell and inhabite with you, as Clement Brigges.."

4. Fine; 6 Oct 1634; Massachusetts Bay Colony, MA 6. Clement Briggs fined 10s for entertaining an Indian without leave. [Rec. of the Governor and Company of Mass. Bay Colony, 1:83]

5. Lands Recorded; 8 Oct 1637; Plymouth Colony, MA 7. Clement Briggs exchanged four acres of land in Plymouth for four acres of land on "Joanes" River. The deed was recorded by Gov. Bradford.

"Know all men by these prnte that I Clement Briggs of Wessaguscus for and in consideracon of the sume of fiue shillings inmoney to me paid by John Browne of Plymouth the eight day ofOctober 1637 do couenant and graunt that the said John Browne shall haue and ejoy for him and his heirs foreuer foure acres of land of the vpper end of that lot of land that appertaineth vnto me the said Clement Briggs and that the said John Browne doth also agree that the sd Clement Briggs shall haue for him & his heirs for euer the quantitie of foure acres of land out of the land of the said John Browne lying at the end and adjoyneing to the residue of the land of the aforsd Clement Briggs at Jonanes Riuer witnesse my hand the day & yeare aforesd. 6. Provided Bond; 6 Mar 1637/38; Massachusetts Bay Colony, MA 8. On 6 Mar, 1637/8, clement Briggs was bonded for £10 for his wife to appear in the next court for Arthur Warren being in her company. [Rec. of the Governor and Company of Mass. Bay Colony, 1:219, 233, & 244] There is no evidence that this was in any way a moral charge against Joan Briggs.

7. Deposition; 29 Aug 1638; Weymouth, Plymouth Co., MA 9 10. The Deposition of Clement Briggs of Weymouth felmonger, taken at New Plymouth the xxix day of August in the fourteenth yeare of ye now reigne of our sovaryne Lord Charles by the grace of God of England &c. 1638, before Thom Prence of New Plymouth gent ovr, and Willm Bradford for the same Gent, assistant of the govnt &c.
"This Deponent Deposeth and sayth that about two and twenty yeares since, this depont then dwelling wth one Mr Samuel Lathame in Barmundsey street Southwarke, a felmonger, and one Thomas Harlow then also dwelling wth Mr. Robte Heeks in the same street a fellmonger, the said Harlow and this depont had often conferrence together how many pelt eich of their masters pulled a week. And this depont deposeth and sayth that the said Robte Heeks did pull three hundred pelts a week, and divers tymes six or seven hundred & more a week in the killinge seasons, wch was the most part of the yeare (except the tyme of lent) for the space of three or foure yeares. And that the said Bobte Heeks sould his sheeps pelts at that tyme for fourty shillings a hundred to Mr Arnold Allard, Whereas this Deponts Mr Samuel Laythame sould his pelts for fifty shilling p C to ye same man, at ye same time, and Mr Heeks pelts were much better ware.

Bradford: "Memorand the XXIXth day of August 1638 'That Clement Briggs acknowledge that for a good & valuble consideracon he hath sould unto Mr. Robte Heeks one acre of land in the upper fall neere the second Brooke & all his right title & interrest into the same to haue * to hold the acre of land unto the said Robte Heeks his heirs and assignes for euer to therr onely pper use and behoofe foreuer.'" 10. Court Appearance; 4 Dec 1638; Massachusetts Bay Colony, MA 12. Clement Briggs was found not guilty of estortion and the case discharged. [Rec. of the Governor and Company of Mass. Bay Colony, 1:247]

11. Lands Recorded - Granted; 6 Oct 1640; Plymouth Colony, MA 13. Clement Briggs was granted land on the south side of "Joanes Riuer." [Rec. of the Colony of New Plymouth, 1:123]. On 6 Oct the bounds of Clement Briggs' land were set. [Rec. of the Colony of New Plymouth, 1:133]

12. Lands Recorded; 15 Oct 1640; Plymouth Colony, MA 14. On 5/15 Oct, 1640, John Howland, Francis Cooke, Joshua Pratt and Thomas Cushman were appointed to examine and adjust the bounds between the lands of Thomas Pence and Clement Briggs, at Jones River.

14. Will; 1648; Weymouth, Plymouth Co., MA 16 17. CLEMENT BRIGE of Waymouth.
1648. To son Thomas, my home Lott at Plemouth, 20 acres, and my Bigest Iron Pott. To son Jonathan, 3 acres of Land Joining John Rees Lands, That is not Brak vp, and to Enter to it when hee is of the aige of 18; When 21 to haue 4th pt of all my land in Waymouth; after the decese of my Wiff one 4th more. If Shee die Before Jonathan Be 21, then it be for the Bringing vp of my Children. To son Clement, my housing and the other halfe of my Land in Waymouth. To Sons Thom, David, John & Remond my other Land at Plemouth Equally amongst them. After Clement do Enter to the forsd Land hee shall giue his Brother Remond, 20s, John 10s; Jonathan shall giue 10s to his bro. "The last will and Testiment of Clement Briggs of Waymouth in New England first I give my soule to God (that) gave it.
"it: I give to my son Thmas my home lott at plemouth 20 acres by esteema and my bigest iron pott.
"It: I give to my son Jonathan 3 acres of my land joning to John ____2s lands that is not break up and to eneter to it when hee is of the aige of 18 years and when he is of the aige of 21 years to have as much ( ) 3 acres one 4th pt of all my land in Waymouth and after decess of my wiff it is my will he shall have one 4th pt mor if shee dye not before hee bee of the age of 21 years But if shee should dye before Jonathan be 21 years ouild then it is my will it shuld be for the bringing up of my children.
"It: I give to my son Clemet my housing and the other half of my land in Weymouth and hee to enter to it when hee is of the aige of 21 years -- if his mother -- be decesed before, but if not then he shuold not have it tell after her decese -- But if my wiff should die before Clemant be --- 21 year ouild it is my will the land should be for the bring up of my children.

2. Jonathan Briggs 1 21 22 (Clement1) was born on 14 Jun 1635 in Weymouth, Plymouth Co., MA 1 21 22 and died before 18 Nov 1690 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 1.

2. Guardian; 17 Sep 1656; Plymouth Colony, MA 28. Mr. Thomas Prence of Eastham was chosen as guardian of Jonathan Briggs, minor, 17 Sept, 1656. [Rec. of the Col of New Ply., Court Orders, 3:107]

3. Apprenticeship; 6 Jun 1654; Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 29 30. Jonathan Briggs, who had been apprenticed to William Hailstone of Taunton as a "taylor" appeared in court and claimed that he had not learned the trade of "taylor". Mr. Hailstone was ordered to pay Jonathan Briggs £15. [Rec. of the Col of New Ply., Court Orders, 3:51, 90, 103]

William Hailstone complained against Jonathan Briggs in an action in the case to the damage of £60 for detaining the goods and chattles of said Hailstone. The jury fined the defendant the costs of the suit. [Rec. of the Col of New Ply., Judicial Acts, 7:103]

7. Deposition; 3 Oct 1662; Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 33. Jonathan Briggs, being 25 years of age, testified 3 Oct 1662 that "6 years before William Browne stated that if he did not return from England, Peter Walker was to be given his land," [Rec. of the Col. of New Plymouth, Court Orders, 4:28]

16. Lands Recorded - Granted; 25 May 1680; Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 42. Jonathan Briggs was on a list of 84 purchasers dated 14 May 1675 and received on 25 May 1680 proprietors' land on the right of Benjamin Dunham's 50 acre division. [Taunton Prop. Rec. 2: 9 & 4:129-130]

17. Lands Recorded - Granted; 5 Mar 1687/88; Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 43. Jonathan Briggs received 50 A. on 3 Mile River and 30 A. on Neapenicket River of Proprietors' land in Taunton. [Taunton Prop. Rec. 2:40] Volumes 2 & 3 of the Taunton Proprietors' Records list 13 pieces of land purchased by Jonathan BRIGGS. The property later included 20 pieces in all in the land Jonathan(3), John(3), David(2) and Remember's heirs received from Jonathan(2) Briggs.

18. Lands Recorded - Sold; 7 Sep 1682; Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 44. Jonathan Briggs of Taunton (wife Experience releasing her dower rights), grantor, to Peter Pitts of Taunton, grantee, one full share of land in Taunton, for £10, 7 Sep 1682. Wit. Shadrack Wilbore and Philip Pointing. [Rec. Bristol Col L.R., 3:72]

19. Probate; 18 Nov 1690; Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 23. The estate of Jonathan Briggs, late of Taunton, dec'd, was administered on 18 Nov 1690 by Experience, relict of Jonathan Briggs, and his eldest son, Jonathan Briggs of Taunton. Son Jonathan was to have all the property on condition that he support and bring up all the other children and give them their share as the come of age. Agreement was made 31 Jan. 1698/9. [Bristol Co. Prob. Rec., 1:1/2]. Division of the property was made 30 Mar, 1709, to the 8 sons, and certain payment made to "the 5 sisters." The sons named were Jonathan Briggs, eldes son, "Dauid" Briggs, Amos Briggs, Thomas Briggs, John Briggs, Benjamin Briggs, Ebenezer Briggs, and Nath'l Briggs. [Rec. Bristol Col L.R., 2:242]

Jonathan married Experience Harvey 45, daughter of William Harvey and Joane Hucker, in 1666 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 23. (Experience Harvey was born on 4 Mar 1644/45 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA 46 and died in 1720 in Taunton, Bristol Co., MA 45.)
