Mary CHAMPLIN, gift to William CHAMPAIN's eldest daughter, to son Joseph at 20 years of age, to wife Elizabeth for bringing up three children he had by her. Adm. inhab. Portsmouth, 25 Feb 1642. Ordered in 1650, along with 5 others to mend all locks & stocks of guns brought to them for a suitable consideration. Commissioner for Portsmouth, 1657-8. Name of first wife unknown, had James, John, Job & Mary, who m. William, son of Jeoffrey CHAMPLIN. Married 2nd, Elizabeth ___ & had Joseph & two others. Son James married Jane ___. Inv. of his estate bears the date 1698. Will of Mrs. Jane BABCOCK is dated 30 Apr 1718, mentions dau. Sarah LEWIS (wife of James), dau. Jane LEWIS (wife of Israel), dau. Elizabeth LEWIS (wife of David), dau. Mary BROWN (wife of George), dau. Hannah LARKIN (wife of Roger) & sons James, William, & Peter. Besides these he probably had a son Job.

BABCOCK, John, son of James, Sen., m. Mary ____. His will dated 1685, mentions eldest son James & "nine more", viz. Ann, Mary, John, Job, George, Elihu, Robert, Joseph, & Oliver. Mrs. Mary BABCOCK m. 2nd Erasmus BABBET & d. 8 Dec 1711.

BABCOCK, Joseph, son of James, Sen. by 2nd wife Elizabeth, m. 1st Dorothy KEY, 13 Apr 1696 & had Elizabeth, b. 29 Jan 1697/8. Mrs. Dorothy BABCOCK d. 14 Dec 1727. Married 2nd Mrs. Hannah COATS, had Abigail, 20 Apr 1731; Authority, 2 Feb 1729/30; Joseph, 14 Oct 1733, & John, 26 Jan 1735/6.

BROWN, George. In 1692, Peter CRANDALL had a son-in-law of this name. The will of Mrs. Jane BABCOCK, Jr., dated 1718, mentions dau. Mary BROWN who appears to have been the wife of a George BROWN. We also find the will of one of the same name at Westerly, dated 14 Sep 1736, mentions wife Charity, eldest son George, sons Peter, John & William, eldest dau, Elizabeth STANTON, dau. Sarah CHAMPLIN & dau. Ruth BROWN.

Another George BROWN was m. to Jerusha, dau. of Joseph LEWIS, 4 Apr 1734.

BROWN, John & BROWN Thomas - their cattle marks appear on the Stonington records as early as 1688.

BURDICK, Robert. Freeman, Newport, 22 May 1655. Married Ruth, dau. of Samuel HUBBARD of Newport, and had Robert, Hubbard, Thomas, Benjamin, Samuel, Naomi [m. Jonathan Rogers], Tacy [m. Joseph MAXSON], Ruth [m. John PHILLIPS] & Deborah [m. Joseph CRANDALL]. Robert BURDICK was with Tobias SAUNDERS arrested by the Mass. authorities for trespassing upon their jurisdiction and imprisoned at Boston until they could pay the fine of £40. He died in 1692.

CASS [or CASE], James - Freeman 28 Oct 1668, probably removed with the first emigrants to Kingstown as many of that name are found there in 1690 and there is no trace of him in Westerly.

CHAMPLIN, Jeoffrey, Sr. - Was of Portsmouth, RI, in 1638; admitted inhab. Newport, 24 Jan 1738/39 & admitted Freeman in 1640. He removed to Westerly with first emigrants in 1661, and in 1695 is mentioned as deceased. He m. ____, & had Jeoffrey, eldest son; William, d. 1 Dec 1715 in his 62nd year; & Christopher. His children were all probably born in Newport [records of that town were destroyed by the British during the Revolution.]

CHAMPLIN, Jeoffrey, son of Jeoffrey Sr., of Kingstown, m. ____, & had Jeoffrey, (William & Hannah?). He was an assistant in the colony from 1696 to 1715 which was about the time he died.

CHAMPLIN, Capt. William, of Westerly, 2nd son of Jeoffrey Sr., m. Mary, dau. of James BABCOCK, Sr., & had children - William [m. Mary, dau. of Joseph CLARK Jr., 18 Jan 1700]; Mary [m. Capt. John BABCOCK]; & Ann, [m. Samuel CLARK, 19 Jan 1698/9].

CHAMPLIN, Christopher, son of Jeoffrey Sr., m. ___ & had Christopher, Jeoffrey, William, Joseph & John. He m. 2nd. Elizabeth, widow of William DAVELL, and d. 2 Apr 1732.

CHAPMAN, Hope. Richard CHAPMAN, of Boston, m. Mary ____, & had Susan, b. 25 Feb 1647/8 [m. ___ Ellis of Stonington?]; Hope, b. 30 Jan 1654/5; Mary, b. 30 Jun 1657. -- Hope, free. inhab. Westerly 1680. He m. ____ & had Richard, only son, b. 20 Feb 1687, and daus. Elizabeth & Hannah. He died 3 May 1698; made a verbal will before James Cornish & John Maxson. Amount of inv. £59 6s 6d. (In his will occurs the following:- "I give to that woman my wife although no wife to me five shillings adding these words I doe protest against her having one penny more of my estate. And I Comite the care of all the Remaining part of my estate whetehr of howseing or lands or moveable estae to the care and charge of my siste Elliss and that my son shall live with her she teaching hem to be A weaver." &c)

CLARK, Joseph - there were 4 brothers of the name of Clark, John, Thomas, Joseph & Carew, by tradition of Bedfordshire, England. Dr. John CLARK was b. 8 Oct 1609 & d. 20 Apr 1676. He was married three times bur left no issue; was several times Deputy Governor, and for a long time Colony Agent in London. [Vol. iii, Co. R.I. His. Soc.]

CRANDALL, John - Freeman, Newport, 1655; Commissioner 1658; his name is the first on list of free inhab. Westerly in 1669. He was the first Elder of the Baptist Society of Westerly. He d. abt. 1676. (In a letter from Samuel HUBBARD to Dr. Edward STENNETT, pastor of a Baptist Church in Bell Lane, London, bearing the date Newport, R.I., Nov. 1676: "Now, dear brother, although we are not destroyed by the Indians, God hath visited this land by taking away many by death - in, in this place, of all sorts. Of the old church, first, Mr. Joseph TORREY; then my dear brother John CRANDALL; then Mr. John CLARKE; then William WEEDEN, a deacon; then John SALMON.") Married Elizabeth, dau. of Samuel GORTON?, and had sons John, Joseph, Peter, Jeremiah, Eber, & (James?).

CRANDALL, John, son of John Sr., in 1696 appears among freemen of Kingstown whither he removed early. His will bears the date 25 Jan 1703/4 - amount of inventory £62.09.06; mentions eldest son John, sons Peter & Samuel, dau. Elizabeth WILCOX, dau. Mary PHILIPS, wife Elizabeth, and son Stephen WILCOX.

CRANDALL, Joseph, son of John Sr., was ordained Elder of Bap. Ch. at Newport 8 May 1715, & d. 12 Sep 1737. His wife was Deborah, dau. of Robert BURDICK.

CRANDALL, Peter, son of John Sr., m. Mary ____. Adm'n on his estate 1734; he had son-in-law George BROWN in 1692.

CRANDALL, Jeremiah, son of John Sr., m. Priscilla ___ & had Jeremiah, Ann, John, James, Hannah, Sarah, Experience, Patience, Susanna, & Mary.

CRANDALL, Eber, son of John Sr., will is dated 22 Aug 1727: Wife Mary ____. Children: John, Eber, Samuel & Joseph - "that I had by my 2nd wife." Mary, Nathaniel, Jonathan, Ebenezer & Jeremiah, "that my now wife hath living", "My brother Nathaniel COTTRELL of North Kingstown."

CRUMB (or CROMB), Daniel. Died in 1713, intestate. Wife, Alice ___, widow of Richard HAUGHTON of New London. Had children William, and a dau. who m. Edward AUSTEN. Mrs. Alice CRUMB d. 29 Jan 1716.

CRUMB, William, son of Daniel, m. Hannah ___ & had Joseph, William, Rachel [m. ___ PENDLETON]; Marcy [m. ___ LAMPHEARE]; Jemima [m. ___ BUTLER], & Elizabeth [m. Edward SAUNDERS].

DAVELL (DEVIL, DAVOL &c) - William DEVILL, freeman of Newport, 1655. Joseph DEVELL made free 1670. In 1683 he is styled Lieutenant, & in 1690, Captain. He took a prominent part in town affairs and was the town's surveyor for many years. He m. ___ & seems to have had but one child, William, who m. Elizabeth ___ & had a son, William, b. 2 Aug 1698. Capt. Joseph DAVELL d. intestate 1715.

(He made over, 26 Dec 1689, to Mary, widow of John BABCOCK, all his estate, "whether in lands or movables", with the consent of his wife, provided said Mary BABCOCK "maintain me & my wife with sufficient meat, drink, clothing, washing & lodging, during our lives."

(in his will, he gives 100 acres to son-in-law Isaac Thompson, lying on the N.E. side of the river "neare my now dwelling house;" also his choice of 200 acres - 100 in woods near George DENISON's, and 100 near the meeting house. "The land I now dwell on to son Joshua." "Item - I give liberty to Isaac Thompson to live inmy now dwelling house five years, if he see fit, ant the two boys to be helpful to Isaac.")

MAXSON, Jonathan, m. Content ROGERS, 1 May 1707 & had Jonathan, b. 16 Jan1708; Content, b. 28 Jan 1709; Joseph, b. 14 Jan 1712; John, b. 2 Mar 1714; Naomi, b. 6 May 1716; Samuel, b. 20 Jul 1718; Caleb, b. 1 Nov 1721; Mary, b. 20 Nov 1723. His will is dated 8 Jun 1732.

PAINTER - Thomas PAINTER had a lot transferred to him by Roger WILLIAMS at Providence, 1638. Thomas, freeman of Newport, 1655. Thomas & Shubal among the first settlers of Westerly in 1661. Thomas PAINTER drowned, 25 Mar 1705/6.

PEMBERTON, Joseph - was of Westerly in 1679. Removed to New London in 1680. He m. Maria MINOR, widow of Samuel MINOR & dau. of ___ AVERY, 19 Mar 1683. Children: James, Joseph, Mary [m. Alexander BAKER] & Elizabeth [m. Jonathan ROGERS]. He d. 11 (14?)Oct 1702. After his death, his wife returned to Boston with her sons; but her daughters remained in New London.

PEMBERTON, Joseph [perhaps son of above] freeman in Westerly, 23 Apr 1691, & held several important offices afterwards. In 1703, he is called. in a deed, "Joseph PEMBERTON, Carpenter, of Westerly."

PENDLETON, James - the name Brian PENDLETON appears in the list of 108 townsmen in Watertown, MA, in 1636. He was afterwards of Portsmouth and was styled "Major". His will bears the date 9 Aug 1667. He m. Eleanor ___ & had but one son, James, & a dau [m. Rev. Seth FLETCHER]. James was first of Watertown, then Sudbury, and lastly of Westerly, R.I., where his name appears in the list of free inhabitants in 1669. He m. 1) Mary ___ & had James, b. at Watertown, MA, 5 Nov 1650; & daus. Mary & Hannah. He married 2) Hannah ___ and had Joseph, b. at Sudbury, 29 Dec 1661; Edmund; Sarah, bap. at Stonington, 18 Apr 1674/5 [sic]; Eleanor. bap. 20 Jul 1679 [admitted to Church at Stonington, 24 Oct 1702]; Dorothy, bap. 3 Oct 1686 [m. ___ COTTRELLE]; Anna [m. Eleazer BROWN of Stonington, 18 Oct 1693]; Patience; & Caleb. Capt. James

PENDLETON was admitted to the church at Stonington, 7 Nov 1680. His will is dated 9 Feb 1702. He died 29 Nov 1709 (MINOR diary) James, his son by wife Mary, & daus. Sarah & Patience are not mentioned in it and probably died early.

PENDLETON, Joseph, son of James, m. 1) ____ & had Mary, bap. at Stonington 29 Apr 1684; Joseph, bap. 10 Mar 1695. He m. 2) Deborah MINOR, dau. of Ephraim, 8 Jul 1696 & had Deborah, b. 29 Aug 1697 [m. Nicholas FRINK, 30 Nov 1715]. Mrs. Deborah PENDLETON d. 8 Sep 1697. Joseph m. 3) Patience, dau. of William POTTS of New London, 11 Dec 1700, & had Joseph, b. 3 Mar 1702; William, b. 23 Mar 1704; & Joshua, b. 22 Feb 1705/6. Joseph PENDLETON was buried 20 Sep 1706.

From the MINOR church records, it appears that Abigail, wife of John REYNOLDS was adminted to the church at Stonington, 28 Apr 1693; Mary, dau. of John REYNOLDS, bap. 19 Sep 1686; Anna, bap. 23 Mar 1692.

SAUNDERS, Tobias - freeman of Newport 1655; of Westerly, 1669. He m. Mary, dau. of Joseph CLARK of Newport, and deice of Deputy Governor John CLARK, and had children John, Edward, Stephen, & Benjamin, none of whom had attained thier majority, 9 Aug 1688, the date of his will. He died about Aug 1695, as he was moderator of a town meeting 4 Jul 1695 and at a meeting 23 Aug 1695, it was voted "That whereas Mr. Tobias Saunder is deceased," &c.

STANTON, Daniel - made free at Westerly, 28 Oct 1668. He was doubtless, the son of Robert STANTON of Newport, and not of Thomas STANTON of Stonington, as has been suposed. Daniel, the son of Thomas, went to Barbadoes & died there, whereas the name appears at Westerly some years after 1685. I extract the following from the records of the Friends' Church at Newport: John, son of Robert STANTON & Avis his wife, was born at Newport, the 6mo 1645. Hannah, daug of John STANTON & Mary his wife, b. 7th 9mo 1670; John, b. 22nd 2mo 1674; Content, b. 20th 10mo 1675; Robert, b. 4th 3mo 1627. Elizabeth dau. of Daniel STANTON & Elizabeth his wife, f. 20th 4mo 1676; Martha, b. 3rd 4mo, 1678; Sarah, b. 28th 12mo 1680; Daniel, 19th 2mo 1683. Robert STANTON d. at Newport, aged 73; buried 29th of 6mo 1672.

STEVENS, Thomas - free inhabitant of Westerly, 1690. He m. a dau. of Henry HALL Sr., as he is called his son-in-law in 1705. In 1670, Henry STEPHENS was an inhabitant of Stonington, and 18 Feb 1694, Thomas, Richard, Henry & Elizabeth, four of his children, were bap. at Stonighton; 22 Apr 1694, Lucy, anothe dau. was bap. Henry STEOHENS m. Elizabeth GALLUP. Ephraim MINOR m. Mary STEPHENS, 24 May 1694. Edward WILCOX of Westerly & Tamsen STEPHENS of Taunton, were m. 5 May 1698.

WELLS, Thomas - Westerly, 1680. He was called "of Ipswich, ship-wright". He died 12 Feb 1700. His will was verbal, dated 27 Dec 1699. In it he mentions children Joseph, Thomas, Mary [m. Ezekiel MAIN Jr., 15 Dec 1690], Ruth, Sarah, John [m. Mary ___], & Nathaniel [m. ___, dau. of Joseph CRANDALL?]. His wife was Naomi ____.

WELLS, Joseph, son of Thomas, m Hannah REYNOLDS, 28 Dec 1681. He was "of Groton" & d. 26 Oct 1711. In his will, he mentions wife Hannah & children Joseph, John, Thomas, & Anne.
