FEATHER & FAN BABY AFGHAN
Updated 26 May 2005, changes shown in red
Materials: Circular needle, size 13, 29", 8 oz baby sayelle
Center: Starting in one corner, cast on 3 stitches, 1st row, YO, K across. Repeat Row 1 until there are 51 YO on each side. Next row: YO, K3tog, K across. Repeat last row until 3 stitches remain, repeat row, fasten off but do not cut yarn unless changing colors at this point.
Lace border: Working all 4 sides at once, pick up 51 YO loops on each edge, placing markers at corners and a different colored marker at the end of the row. The remaining rows will be worked around. Note that the basic lace pattern of each row is [*(YO, K1) 6x, K2tog 6x] and only the pattern stitches on the end of each row change with every 4th row to create the 45° angles of the corners as the lace is being worked out from the center. I've made those changes in each row bold to emphasize them. When the pattern is correct, the center stitch in each fan will continue outward in a straight line, so this becomes an easy way to check your work.
