SAMUEL'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH CEMETERY, Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and is located South of Lavansville, off Route 31 from Somerset to Bedford, Pa.

Samuel's Evangelical Lutheran Church, was organized in Bedford County at an early date, which part of Bedford County April 17, 1795, was set apart as Somerset County, and Somerset Township, was formed in the early part of 1796 from Quemahoning and Milford Townships, formerly Townships of Bedford County. (Quoting from Watkin's History of Bedford, Somerset & Fulton Co., )."The earliest records in existance of Samuel's Evangelical Lutheran Church do not show when the organization was effected. It was prior to the year 1734, however. The early records were written in German, and from a transaction made by Rev. J.F. Kuhlman (Pastor in 1884), it is learned that "on April 17, 1791", after a public profession of her faith, and the promise to live according to God's Commandments, Rachel, a negress belonging to Peter Ankeny, was received into covenant with God and His Church by baptism; and in order that she might have aid and protection in her Christian life, the Elder, Peter Ankeny, and the Deacon, Henry Stahl, took upon themselves the office as sponsors." (Quoting from Pastors & People of Somerset Classis, by Berlin Publishing Company, 1840).

The first church, which was owned jointly by Reformed and Lutherans, was located about one mile south of Lavansville, in Somerset Township. About 1846, a disagreement arose, which ultimately led to the separation of the two congregations. Rev. Peter Rizer, a Lutheran Minister, introduced the mourner's bench into revival meetings he was conducting at Samuel's. The conservatives of congregations, under the leadership of George Flick, disapproved of the new methods, and locked the church. The revival party, under the leadership of David Woy, who donated the ground for the purpose, withdrew and built a Lutheran Church at Lavansville. The Reformed congregation moved to Lavansville, and in 1856 built what is now known as Salem Reformed Church, Lavansville. (Again quoting from Watkin's History of Bedford, Somerset & Fulton,). "It is beleived that a Rev. Long was the first pastor of Samuel's Old Church, a pastor who was one of the first, if not the very first Lutheran Minister in Bedford County. On August 15, 1846, the Lutherans of the old Samuel's Congregation, under the leadership of David Woy, decided to build a new Church in the village of Lavansville, and on April 5, 1847, it was resolved to change the name from Samuel's to the Mount Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church at Lavansville.

However, in 1954, the first old Samuel's Church is still in a thriving condition, and the cemetery, adjacent to a new brick edifice, is well kept, and is still known as Samuel's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
