NEW CENTERVILLE

Quoting from page 544, History of Bedford, Somerset & Fulton Counties History, 1884, by Waterman, Watkins.
"New Centerville is a town of from 250 to 300 inhabitants. The town was laid out in 1834 by Michael Freeze, who gave it the name it now bears, excepting the prefix, "New" which was added when the villaga became a borough. John Witt made the survey of lots. John Freeze erected the first house. In 1884 it is still standing and owned by Reuben McMillen. The first hotel was built by Michael Freeze in 1836. 1884, it is the dwelling of Leonard Ferrel. The first store was erected by Francis Phillippi in 1835; the first wagon shop by Aaron Will in 1843; the first blacksmith shop by Michael Freeze in 1830, and the first shoe-maker-shop by William Aughinbaugh in 1835.

The town was incorporated as a borough on March 6, 1854, and on March 17th, the following were elected the first borough officers:
    • Burgess, Aaron Will.
    • Councilmen, Josiah Miller; Daniel Dull; and W.S. Harrow.
    • Street Commissioner, Peter Brubaker.
    • Assesor, S.H. Dull.
    • Constable, Jonathan Gnagy.
    • Justice of the Peace, A.S. Will.
    • Judge of Election, John A. Snyder.
    • Inspectors, John L. Meyers and Jacob Knable.
    • School Directors, William Scott, Joseph Smith, Daniel Schrock, John Parson, George Brant, and Henry Freeze.
    • Auditors, Reuben McMillan, Wm. B. Freeze, and Josiah Phillippi."

Quoting from Pastors & People, of Somerset Classis, page 226 Published by Berlin Publishing Company, Berlin, Pa., 1940.
"Tradition has it that William Weber preached occassionally at New Centerville, as early as 1786. Spangenberg, the first resident pastor in Berlin, is reputed to have ministered to the Reformed people of the New Centerville community. The old Berlin Church Book contains the record that John Miller, "school master from the Ridge", was married January 13th, 1789, to Dorthea Fisher, daughter of Jacob Fisher, one of the founders of Berlin. The ceremony was performed by Spangenberg, presumably at Berlin. Both John Fisher and his wife, Dorthea, are buried in New Centerville Cemetery. In 1795, Henry Giese, began his ministry among these people, baptismal records extending back to that year. In 1796, land for church and cemetery purposes was acquired. It was not until May, 1811, that the corner stone was laid and the building was not completed until 1819. The church, erected jointly by the Lutherans and Reformed, was a log structure, arranged on three sides with galleries, and provided with convential high pulpit for the preacher. At a later date the building was lined and weatherboarded. For more than fifty years the congregations continued the use of this building as a chuich".

Quoting further from Somerset Classis, Pastors & People p. 226.
"In 1871 a modern brick building was erected at a cost of $8000.00. The dedication took place on October 6, 1872. Rev. E.H. Higbee, then Professor at Mercersburg College, preached the sermon. On Thursday evening prior to the dedication, the pastor, Rev. A. E. Truxal, conducted 'validictory' services in the old church. On Saturday morning, preparatory services were conducted in German by Rev. Benjamin Kneppe; in English by Dr. Higbee. Rev. H.F. Keener preached on Saturday evening, and Rev. Wm. Rupp preached the sermon on Sunday evening. The building committee consisted of: 1. Jonathan Hay 2. Josiah Miller 3. George Hauger 4. Peter Putman 5. Reuben McMillen 6. John Weller"

Quoting further from Somerset Classis, Pastors & People p. 227.
"With a large number of accessions to the church during the early 80's, the membership reached it's peak with more than 100 Souls. By the end of the century the decline had set in. In 1913, the membership was reduced to 34; in 1930 to 19; in 1935, when the Reformed congregation was disbanded, only 8 remained of a once flourishing congregation. During the last 40 years the leading spirit of the congregation was elder John C. Weller. Even when the congregation had dwindled hopelessly, remained loyal to the church he loved so well."

New Centerville gave 3 of its sons to the ministry; Rev. J. Grant Walter, Pittsburgh, Pa; Rev. J.C. Knable, Kutstown, Pa: and Rev. E.E. Weller, San Pedro, California.

In 1958, the Lutheran Church is in a flourishing condition in New Centerville, and many of the above names are to be found in scribed on head-stones in the adjacent cemetery, which inscriptions have been copied and appear on the following records as mimeographed in the following pages herein.
