Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized about the year 1783, by Rev. Steck, whose labors extended over a vast region lying on both sides of the Allegheny Mountains. Among the original members (as heads of families) were: 1. Frederick Hostollar; 2. Andrew Woy; 3. Casper Swank; 4. Thomas Swank; 5. Jacob Barnhart; 6. Peter Barnhart; 7. Joseph S. Miller; 8. John Mostollar; 9. George Mostollar; 10. Michael Mowry, Sr.; 11. Christian Spangler; 12. Henry Baker; 13. Benjamin Zerfoss

The first House of Worship was built jointly by members of the Lutheran and Reformed Congregations, about the year 1783. The second edifice was erected by members of the same congregations in 1820. In the year 1808, a tract of land consisting of 60 acres was granted by the Pennsylvania Legislature to Andrew Woy, Jacob Swank and Henry Shaver, Trustees of the Presbyterian, Reformed and Lutheran Congregations, which was held co-jointly until 1860, when the Lutherans withdrew and the land was equally divided. The first church erected in about 1820, was built on a plot of ground, which now, is a well filled cemetery on the east side of Highway Route 53, passing through the town. The first building was a log structure two stories high. The Reformed people continued to use the building until 1893, when the first structure was erected.

Rev. Henry Geise was the first Pastor, and he was succeeded by Rev. H.G. Ibbeken, until his death in 1844. For nearly 40 years the Union arrangement continued until October, 1847, when the Reformed people withdrew and organized themselves into a separate congregation, with Jacob Snyder and Nicholas Zehenis elected Elders, and John Suder and John Schmidt elected Deacons. The first membership list consisted of the following: 1. Jacob Snyder; 2. Nicholas Zehneis; 3. John Suder; 4. John Schmidt; 5, Elias Crissy; 6. Peter Wilt; 7. Samuel Bender; 8. Nicholas Apple; 9. Abraham Good; 10. Joseph Long; 11. Daniel Wilt; 12. Josiah Wilt; 13. Elizabeth Crissy; 14. Elizabeth Apple; 15. Sophia Wilt; 16. Lavina Wilt; 17. -----; 18. Cath. Zachneiz; 19. Cath. Crissy; 20. Cath. Zerfoss; 21. Rebecca Schmidt; 22. Cath. Zahneis; 23. Elb. Wilt.
