The Cheyney Burial Ground on Concord Road,
North of Cheyney Station, Chester County, PA.
Anonymous, 1907

[Transcribed by Dave Swerdfeger]

The tenets of the Friends' Meeting forbid soldiers or men of war to be interred in their burial ground. When Major John Harper was to be buried his widow had to find another burial place than the Friends' grounds. Squire Thomas Cheyney that sterling Quaker patriot and friend of Washinton, offered the widow Harper a burial lot in his orchard, stating he too would be buried there in time. She being a relative accepted the offer. The oldest burial is that of Major John Harper in 1803. Squire Cheyney in 1811. Thomas Cheyney and wife Mary on October 7th, 1809, gave unto William Cheyney, Jesse Cheyney and Curtis Cheyuey, Trustees, 40 square perches of land in Thornbury township, Chester County, Pa., for a burial ground. This was increased in 1865 by 14 square perches, making 54 square perches. The first sexton of whom we have knowledge was James Vickers, who was followed by Hatton Baldwin, next William Maison, who took charge in 1861 and held it until his death in 1897. From his record of interments the following record has been compiled: Many of the graves (50 or more) at this time, 1907, are marked by wooden stakes, which have been renewed from time to time, and in a short time will rot off and the position of the graves be lost, unless the relatives and friends supply stone markers numbered for future reference. The old parts of the burial ground is well filled, the markers having decayed there is nothing above the surface to show for the remains.
