Rev. Mr. McClintock, of Bear Creek, was the first preacher of this denomination who labored here, earning as a supply as early as 1808, and preaching in the log cabins of the settlers. The first church was a log structure, 33 feet square, built by Abram Smith and William Minteer in 1815. Rev. John Dickey, the first settled minister da.me about 1812, and stayed for 35 years.

The village of Slate Lick is situated almost on the East Franklin township line. The division of the old township of Buffalo left but a small portion of territory to South Buffalo in 1847. The portion left is of considerable historical interest. The borough of Freeport is in this township.

This stronghold of the Presbyterian denomination had its inception in 1802. This was the first date at which the attention was called to the little circle of Presbyterians, although it is believed they had held services as early as 1798. At that time there was no church edifice of this denomination in Armstrong county, so a subscription paper was circulated and a call issued for a pastor. Rev. John Boyd came and served until 1810, and the church in those da.ys was called "Boyd's Lower Meetinghouse." Supplies served until 1815 when Rev. John Reddick came. He preached until 1848. Infirmities of old age caused him to ask for relief. He died in 1850 and was buried near the church.

The first church, a log one, was replaced by a brick building in 1830. The bricks were burned on the spot. James Hill, James Rag Rea and James Smith were the building oommittee. Charles Sipes settled near the present village of McIntyre about 1795.
