EPITAPHS - BATTLE MONUMENT AT BLOODY BROOK

Erected Aug 1831. On this ground Capt. Thomas LATHROP, & Eighty-four Men under his command, including Eighteen teamsters from Deerfield, Conveying Stores from that town to Hadley, were ambuscaded by about 700 Indians and the Captain & Seventy-six Men Slain, 18 Sep 1765, (old style). The Soldiers who fell, were described by a contemporary Historian as a Choice Company of Young Men, the very flower of the County of Essex. None of whom were ashamed to Speak with the enemy in the gate. The grave of the Slain is marked by a Stone Slab 21 Rods Southerly of this Monument.

  • Mrs. Jemima TUTE, Successively Relict of Messrs. William PHIPS, Caleb HOWE & Amos TUTE. The first two were killed by Indians, PHIPS, 5 Jul 1743, HOWE, 27 Jun 1755. When HOWE was killed, she & her children, then 7 in number, were carried into captivity. The oldest daughter went to France & was married to a French gentleman. The youngest was torn from her breast and perished with hunger. By the aid of some benevolent Gent'n, and her own personal heroism, she recovered the res. She had two by her last husband, outlived both him & them, & died 7 Mar 1805.
