Methodist Episcopal Church

The Half Way Brook Village Methodist Episcopal Church was built very near the site of the old Church Building. Rev. Joseph MILLER was the preacher in charge at the time of its erection and exerted a great deal of influence and put forth labors for its completion. The Church was deicated by the Rev. J. G. MINER, 4 Jul 1859. A dissatisfaction arose in the Church and Ben Joseph MILLER who was a supply under Elder DAY was superceded by --- MARTINS, who served out the balance of the year as a supply up to April 1860. The Newark Conference at its session this year appointed Rev. Samuel J. MORRIS as preacher of Barryville Circuit. He was a man of energy and the church thrived under his labors. He remarried and in two years he was followed by Rev. Henry LITTS, who commenced his labors in March 1862. He labored with the people two years acceptably, a few were added to the Church the last year which remained as probationers until the following year. Rev. W. C. HENDRICKSON came on this appointment 24 Mar 1864.

The Rev. Benjamin DAY was Presiding Elder from 1856 to 1860. He was followed by Rev. S. W. MILLIARD, who was Presiding Elder from 1860 to 1864. He was followed by Rev. S. C. VANCLEAVE who was appointed Presiding Elder, 22 Mar 1864.

The records of the church have been badly kept, so that no trace of the Church's history previous to the statements make here can be found. Memory has served some of the old members who report the following preachers that have labored upon this circuit during all of the changes that have been made in appointments and directing the circuits from 1846 to 1866 - a term of 20 years.

        • Reuben VAN SYCKLE, 1846 - 1847
        • William G. WIGGIN, 1847 - 1848

        • Joseph MILLER, 1859 -
        • --- MARTEEMS, 1859 - 1860
        • Samuel J. MORRIS, 1860 - 1862
        • Henry LITTS, 1862 - 1864

        • Jacob WEBER, 1871 - 1874

        • M. S. LAMBERT, 1880 - 1881-2-3
The Rev. William C. HENDRICKSON began his labors on this charge in April 1864. The Congregations were small - the class not well attended, - the church records very imperfectly kept in an old book like the counting house blotter. No marriages or deaths were recorded of the two previous years. The Sabbath Schools were in a very bad condition. This department of the work demanded strenuous efforts to remove the difficulties out of the way.

The 1st Sermon preached at Mongaup was upon the occasion of the Death of Thomas COLEMAN, who died 12 May 1864, aged 72 years, who was a man full of faith and the Holy Ghost. The following account was published in the Christian Advocate in reference to the Deceased. (Account of death given).

The first quarterly meeting was held at Mongaup, May 28 & 29, which was attended with much interest.

Rev. C. S. VAN CLEVE, P. E.

Mar 1, 1866. The Mongsup M. E. Church is the oldest on this circuit. The members are general aged and have been connected with the Church for 20 years, owing to a glorious revival about 20 years under the labors of Rev. Mr. BEAGLE, about 30 was converted and many remain until this day as pillars in the church. Some have been removed, others have past away to their reward in heaven. This year we have been blest on this appointment. The Lord in answer to prayer has poured out his spirit upon us. Many souls have been converted and the work still goes on. We have a neat Church edifice and the liberality of the people as demonstrated by the amount of missionary collections, which amount reached the sum of $50.00. Donations to the pastor amounted to $100.00. Thus Temperal and Spiritual matters sweetly blend together. May prosperity attend the efforts of all the people of God and may the Ministry be blessed.

W. C. HENDRICKSON, 22 Mar 1865

The corner stone of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Pond Eddy, N.Y. was laid 17 Oct 1882. Sermon by Rev. William E. BLAKESLEE of Port Jervis, N.Y., Rev. W. H. RUSSELL of Sparrowbush, Rev. A. K. STREET of Camden, N. J.
