THE AMENIA BURYING GROUND. New York

The old CEMETERY of Amenia lies about a mile north-east of the present village. The Church Society to which it belonged was called "Carmel in the Nine Partners;" the building went by the name of the "Red Meeting House." The land for both was donated by Stephen Hopkins. All traces of the old church have long since disappeared, but the men who built it, and who worshipped in it lie in the little crowded Cemetery. It is to preserve their names inscribed on the rapidly disintegrating stones that this record is made. With a few exceptions, there have been no burials in this ground for nearly forty years. At one time it was greatly neglected, but now it is in good hands, and will be cared for in the future. Even the best of care cannot restore the fading lines of the quaint old inscriptions, nor bring to light the missing names on some of the broken stones. There are two or three so broken that nothing remains by which to identify them.

THE AMENIA UNION CEMETERY. New York

In the beautiful sunny spot a short distance west of Amenia Union, lie many of the early settlers of the "Oblong " valley. The cemetery, though one of the oldest in the town, the earliest stone being inscribed 1749, is still used for burials, being in excellent order, and well cared for. The "Oblong" church, where Rev. Mr. Knibloe preached so many years, stood on the hill east of this burying ground, almost on the Connecticut boundary line, many of his congregation coming from Connecticut. Amenia Union is sometimes called "Hitchcock Corners."

BURYING GROUND AT SOUTH AMENIA. New York.

This Burying Ground is on the south side of the road, about midway between Amenia Union and South Amenia, near the site of the church built in 1786, from the remains of the "Round Top Meeting House," of Amenia Union, which for some reason was taken down at that time. This Church has since given place to a third, called the "New Church of South Amenia." Some of the headstones in this burying ground bear an earlier date than that of the erection of the Church, but this may indicate removals from other places. The ground is well kept and cared for, and is one of the largest in the town.
