Private, Major Allen's Company, Col. Putnam's Regiment, Continental Army, April 1, 1777 to Dec. 31, 1779; reported deserted Jan. 1, 1780; returned to duty and made up the deficiency in his term, as stated in the record index in the Secretary's office: "Said Edwards and others, of Northampton, left camp Jan. 1, 1780, under the misapprehension that their terms of service had expired, when in reality they were held liable to serve a full three years term from the date of their enlistments, and were accordingly returned as deserters. They later returned to the army, a resolve having been passed, June 5, 1780, remitting the penalties for unintensionsl desertion where soliders returned to duty and filled out the full three years term. They again left the service, without permission, but the second charge of desertion was an unjust one, and arose form a misconstruction on the part of their officers as to the additional time they were required to serve. Their wages were allowed, and made up for the full three years service by authority of resolve of April 20, 1781." After the war Oliver Edwards was appointed Ensign, June 21, 1787, and Captain, Aug. 31, 1789; recieved on honorable discharge Feb. 10, 1791; his widow recieved a pension in 1843.
