Inscriptions copied from the Burying-Ground in Charlestown, 18 May 1849
  • The first is from a plain granite shaft about twelve feet in height standing upon the most elevated part of the ground: HARVARD -- On the twenty sixth day of September, A. D. 1828, this stone was erected by the graduates of the University at Cambridge, in honor of its founder; who died at Charlestown on the twenty sixth day of September, A. D. 1638.

  • Here lyes ye body of Mrs. Susanna FROTHINGHAM, Widow of Mr. John FROTHINGHAM, who d. 18 Aug 1745, ae 60 yrs, 26 dys
  • Here lies buried ye body of Mrs. Lydia PHILLIPS, wife of Mr. Eleazar PHILLIPS, who departed this life 4 Apr 1738, ae 47 yrs
  • Nathaniel PHILLIPS, son of Mr. Eleazer & Mrs. Lydia PHILLIPS, d. 25 Jan 1719/20, ae 9 mos, 6 dys

  • Here lyes ye body of Elizabeth FROTHINGHAM, wife of Joseph FROTHINGHAM (Daug'tr to Mr. Caleb & Mrs. Anne CALL), who d. 5 Aug 1727, in the 20th year of her age
  • Here lyes ye body of Capt. Richard MARTIN, d. 2 Nov 1694, ae 62 yrs
  • Here lyes buried the body of John WAYT, who departed this life 29 Jan 174-5 (sic), ae 43 yrs
  • Here lyes ye body of Mrs. Ruth WAITE, wife of Capt. John WAITE, who d. 2 Dec 1721 in the 33d year of her age
  • Here lyes intered the body of ye Hon'l Thomas GRAVES Esq., who departed this life in his sleep, 19 Jun 1747, ae 63. He was a beloved Physician, an upright Judge, & a wise & good man.
  • Sacred to the memory of the Hon. James RUSSELL, who d. 24 Apr 1798. He represented the town of Charlestown for many years in the General Court, was Treasurer of the County, Judge of the Court, and member of the Honorable Council was an able & a faithful servant.
  • Also of Katharine his wife, daughter of the Hon'l Thomas GRAVES, who d. 17 Sep 1778, ae 61 yrs.
  • And of their children:

    • Rebecca, wife of the Hon. J. LOWELL, who d. 15 Sep 1816

    • Margaret, wife of Hon. J. CODMAN, who d. 12 Mar 1789
  • Jonathan LEMMON, son of Mr. Joseph & Mrs. Elizabeth LEMMON, d. 16 Jul 1724, ae 15 mos
  • Here Lyes intered ye body of Mrs. Sarah FOSTER, wife of Mr. Richard FOSTER, Jr., who d. 16 Nov 1720, ae 29
  • Also two of their children: Rebecca, ae 15 mos; Katharine, ae 5 mos (no dates given)
  • Here lies intered the remains of the Hon. Richard FOSTER, Esq., who d. 29 Aug 1774, ae 82 yrs. He sustained with reputation the office of High Sheriff for the County of Middlesex for many years, and upon his resignation, was appointed a Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, for the same County, in which office he continued until his decease.
  • Here lies intombed the body of Thomas JENNOR, Esq., who d. 23 Jun 1765, ae 72 yrs
  • Here lies intered the body of the Hon'e Charles CHAMBERS, Esq., who departed this life 27 Apr 1743, in ye 83d year of his age. He was for many years one of his Majesty's Council, a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and a Justice of the Peace for ye County of Middlesex; all which offices he discharged with great honor & fidelity.
  • Here lies intered the body of the Hon. Daniel RUSSELL, Esq., who departed this life 6 Dec 1763, ae 78 yrs. Who upwards of 20 years was a member of his Majesty's Council for this Province. He also served the Province as Commissioner of Impost & the County of Middlesex as Treasurer for more than 50 years.
