The chh was herwith told yt it was an utter inconsistency to exercise discipline toward ye children in case of scandall, and yet to deny them the priviledge of baptisme for their children; and accordingly advised not to rest in an implicit faith respecting their children, but to study the scriptures wherby to find ye extent of the covenant relating to them.

(2) yt She went out of ye County to Boston to be married (3) yt she ran away with ye man in the night unknown to her Parents. (4) that her Parents, by their cou[n]tenances and expressions Seemed greatly grieved at wt She had done. • On 2 Aug 1730 . at ye conclusion of ye ordinance of ye Lords supper; having given to ye chh ye reasons why I spake to ym, at at yt time, and not to ye Congregation, I minded ym of their duty to suppress ye prophane Routs of children and youth, between meetings, in ye place of worship, obsreving to ym yt ye generality of families yt attended publick worship with us, were as to both or one parent at least; of ye chh; told ym of the evill pratice of a noise in ye streets going from publick worship, ye like to which in populus Boston it self I never observed; laid before ym their duty (and being numerus, and so capable of it) to unite together for ye choice of such select men (is Such could be had) as would take cake to have such persons to keep publick houses; as would [p. 39] be conscienciously carefull to keep good orders for ye Suppression of the ruining Sin of excessive drinking. And then added yt I had little expectation of any good coming by wt I had said to them; and yt I should not have said wt I did were it not yt an Infinite Person whome I knew to be then presant had comanded me to warn my pp, and to doe it whether they would heir or whether they would forbear, yea tho they should be rebellious; and yt if I did not warn ym it should bear this penalty ye he would require their blood and ye blood of their children at my hand.

  • 17 Oct 1731 . My Nieghbour G. WEEKS, a member of my chh, the last year undertook [p. 46] to be a Preacher to ye Indians without ever saying a word to his pastor about it, or any other, so farr as appease, except some of the Indians . being blamd by me for his precipitancy and rashness; he pretend repentance; and yet, of late, without taking any notice of his Pastor he sets up for a Preacher to a part of my Chh and Congration; yea tho I expressly advised him, as his pastor, by a note I sent him, not to presume on doing of it. Certainly neither he nor they that unite with him in this evill way can have any ground to expect a plessing. Yea has he not herby exposed himself to publick Censure?

    If we Consider [p. 47]
      1. he has no more, if so much as barly comon education.

      2. yt ye making of ministers of ye lowest of ye pp is in Scripture disallowed, as being a raproach to yt Sacred office, 2 Kings 17 - 32 . yet he being evidently Such an one, has thrust himself into ye ministry.

      3. the comission in Mat : 28 . 19 . cannot be given to pp incomon, but to some distinguishingly qualified persons, as is there evident . accordingly, for persons, on conceit of their own fitness, or with ye Concurrence of a few private Christians only, to Set up for preachers, must needs be inexcusable presumption.

      4. for one of ye members of my chh to take upon him, without my leave, yea against my declared mind, to preach to a pp of whom I have ye pastorall charge, as this man has done is (1) expresly cross to [p. 48] taht comand in Heb : 13 . 17. (2) its a violation of his covenant ingagment when received into our chh, which obliges him to submit to ye government &c: (3) it tends to absolute confusion in all our instituted chhs; for, if he may take one part of my Flock to preach to; another may as well take another, and another a third; and wt them becomes of ye Pastorall office into which, ye Ministers are in a publick & solemn manner brought: Yea where is any flock for them to lead, if others may act according to this mans disorderly and aspiring humour, and practice!
But be it noted, yt tho he was invited, and did accept to preach to a part of my Congregation, and, as I was told, actually did it; yet on receiving my Note, he Since tells me he did then forbear, and whether he did it Since, at another House, as is Said I doe not yet learn.
