ROCKY HILL CEMETERY

The Third Society of Wethersfield, comprising the southern section of the town, and known as Stepney Parish, was incorporated in May, 1722. The inhabitants, however, continued to use the old yard of the First Society until 19 Jan 1731, when it was "Voated and agreed that we would have a burying Yard ot bury our dead in on that hill known by ye name of Coals Hill a little Southward of that place where Andrew ATTWOOD formerly erected a Coopers-Shop -- and by a Voat made Choys of Capt. Ephraim GOODRICH, Sargt. Thomas DEMING and Mr. Samwel WILLIAMS to be a Committee on behalf of ye Society To apply themselves to ye Town of Wethersfield at a Town Meeting in March next for a Confirmation of ye aforesd burying yard, and to Desire ye Town to Send a Committee to lay it out to this Society for ye use aforesd."

This petition was granted, as the following report of March 5th implies: "We, the Subscribers Appointed a Committee by the Town of Weathersfield to Lay out a Burying Yard of a Suitable bigness for ye Use of Stepney parish att a place Called Coles Hill, Did on the 4th of sd. March perform sd Service as follows vis. Having Measured Six Rods East from ye South East Corner of Samuell SMITHs Land We Sett down a Stone; From which we Measured 12 Rods Eastward, Att the End of which 12 Rods We Sett Down a Stone; We then Measured Soutward 20 Rods, were We Set Down a Stone; From wich we measured 12 Rods Westward, where We Sett Down a Stone: From which we measured 20 Rods Northward which brought us to the Stone first Mentioned."

"May 31, 1731. Whereas there is a burying Yard agreed upon by this Society, and Granted a Lot out to us by ye Town of Wethersfield, This Society at ys meeting have agreed by Voat to make Suitable and Decent Provision for our Carrying on of funerals among us."

This, with its additions in 1800, 1849, and 1859, is the only cemetery in Rocky Hill, which was incorporated as a town in May 1843. The earliest stone, bearing the date of 2 Jun 1731, records the death of the infant daughter of Benjamin & Mary DEMING
