POPULATION OF UNION

The population of the town in the years when a census has been taken is as follows:
  • 1756 - 500
  • 1774 - 514
  • 1782 - 552
  • 1790 - 631
  • 1800 - 767
  • 1810 - 752
  • 1820 - 757
  • 1830 - 711
  • 1840 - 669
  • 1850 - 728
  • 1860 - 732
  • 1870 - 627
  • 1880 - 539
  • 1890 - 431
Thus we see that the town reached its maximum population in 1800, when it was 767, and it's minimum at the last census, when it was smaller than at any other time since the first census was taken. From 1756 to 1800 there was a steady growth. From 1800 to 1860 there was some variation, but on the whole it continued about the same. Since 1860, there has been a steady decline. This has been owing to various causes, the principal of which ar the decline and removal of the shoe industry and the desertion of the farms for the West or for cities and villages.
