By the provisions of the act of the General Assembly, passed in 1711, justices of the peace were to be appointed by the General Assembly, annually, and commissioned by the Governor for the time being, under the seal of the Stte. This provision was adopted in the constitution in 1818, but was changed by an amendment adopted in 1850, by wihch the justices of the peace are to be appointed by the electors of the several towns. The statue of 1851 provides that they shall be appointed for two years.
