Know all men by these presents that whereas Henry CHAMPION & Stephen DEWOLFE are bound in ye Recognizance of Then pounds Cash for me Ephraim JONES. That I shall carry it peaceably & quietly to wards all her Majesties liege Subjects especially towards my wife Sarah JONES untill the County Court at New London June next Know ye that I do make over & secure to them the s'd CHAMPION & DEWOLFE about sixty acres of upland and meadow that I have at Pochague at the pond meadow in Saybrook as will appear when Record. To save and keep them & Each of them harmless from any damage that shall accrue to them by s'd Recognizance

The lands of Thomas NORTON in Oyster River quarter

Whereas it doth appear that there is two percells of land in Oyster River quarter the one of meadow about ten acres, and the other of upland about twenty acres belonging to Thomas NORTON with a fifty pound Commonage in Oyster River quarter, And twenty five pounds Commonage in the town Commons, which Lands originally did belong to Francis BUSHNELL miller in Saybrook deceased and by him disposed to John NORTON and from John NORTON disposed of to his brother Thomas NORTON and there being no record found of the same. The persons concerned in a loveing freindly way viz: John NORTON and Samuell BUSHNELL miller son and executor to the will of his father Francis BUSHNELL deceased do agree that the abovesaid lands, the ten acres of meadow lying and being at long point and the twenty acres of upland at Cooks hill brooke with the Commonage belonging as above expressed shall be and belong to the said Thomas NORTON his heirs and successors for ever free from any incumbrance let or molestation from them their heirs and successors for ever and do order that this Instrument shall be recorded for the said Thomas his security n the book of records of Saybrook, and that this is our true meaning as signified by our hands here unto subscribed this 29th July 1685.

Being Ten Acres of upland lying & being in Tulleys point plaine belonging Say Brook Being bounded Northward with the land of Deacon William DUDLEY, Eastward with the boggie meadow belonging to the ferry Southward with the highway, that goes to the ferry and Westward with the Common, from the said John BULL Junior and his heirs. To him the s'd Thomas NORTON & his heirs executors administrators & assigns forever to have, hold occupie, possess and quietly enjoy the aforesaid Ten Acres of land with the privileges & appurtenances thereunto belonging as more fully appears by a deed of sale given under the said BULL's hand and seal bearing date with this Record which deed of sale was acknowledged by the said BULL to be his act and deed before Nathaniell LYNDE Comis'r October 1st 1697.

1. John WHITTLESEY Bought of Sergt. Samuell JONES five Acres of upland in the upper division of lots in Tillis point plaine, Being Bounded Northward with the land laid out to William BEAMONT, And eastward with the ferry mens boggie meadow, And Southward with the lot of John WHITTLESEY And westward with the Country road or common with all and singular the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging, as more fully doth appear by a deed of sale under the said JONES his hand and seal bearing date with this record June 27, 1683.

2. John WHITTLESEY Bought of David PARKER five Acres of upland in the third division in tillies point plaine. Being bounded northward with the land laid out to Nath'll RUDD, Eastward with Richard RAYMOND's meadow Southward with the land laid out to Joseph PARKER, And westward with the Country highway with all and singular the privileges & appurtenances thereunto belonging as more fully appears by a deed of sale under the said David PARKER's hand & seale bearing date with this record Octob'r 27th 1685.

Being Twenty acres of upland and six acres of meadow be it more or less lying and being at a place near tillies point belonging to Saybrook four acres of which meadow adjoining to the upland on the South and therefore bounded Southward to Creek and westward by the land formerly David PARKER's & John CIRTLAND's and Nicholas MASON's land & the Common highway and northward by the highway and eastward by the boggie meadow of Thomas NORTON and the meadow land of Abraham POST the other two acres lyeing near ragged rock, and there fore bounded on the east by a creek & on the Southward to the meadow land formerly Mathew GRISWOLD's of Lyme and Westward to a creek and northward by the meadow land formerly John CLARK's with the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging as more fully appears by a deed of sale given under the said Daniell RAYMOND's hand and seal bearing date November the 14th 1692.

Thomas MERRILL Bought of Nicholas MASON Seven acres and a half of upland be it more or less lying and being in Oyster River Quarter being bounded northward and eastward with the land of Sarah PRATT the wife of Joseph PRATT and Southward with the land of Hannah BULL the wife of David BULL and and bounded westward with the land of Thomas MERRILL with all the privileges and appurtenances there unto belonging or in any wais appertaining as more fully appears by a deed of sale under the Nicholas MASON's Hand &seal bearing date with this record August 29, Anno Domini 1688.

To all whom these presents may concern greeting:

Know ye That I John CHAPMAN doe for good considerations me here unto moveing more especially my tender care & love to my son Joseph CHAPMAN doe hereby give, grant, ratify and confirm unto my said son Joseph all those lands & privileges which my Honered father Capt. Robert CHAPMAN gave to my two sons John & Joseph CHAPMAN by his last will and testament unto my said son Joseph to him his heirs for ever allso I give to my son Joseph a certain tract of land in Oyster river quarter at a place known by the name of the fishing brook plaine containing in or about seventy acres more or less bounded on the north by Joshua BUSHNELL bought of Mr. BUCKINGHAM east on John BULL's and the Commons South on Stephen BUSHNELL, and highway West upon the highway that runs from William SPENCER's to the Commons between s'd land & Mr. Nath'll CHAPMAN & Mr. Samuell BATES land more over I do give to my s'd son one hundred pound right in Oyster River Quarter Commons in all undivided lands & free and full right for grass or feede Timber stone or what other privileges or immunities that shall in any wise or at any time arise from or acrue from one hundred pound right to my said son Joseph him and his heirs for ever furthermore I do give to my s'd son Joseph half a hundred pound right in the oxpasture all which above said particular I doe freely fully and absolutely give & resign up to my said son Joseph CHAPMAN him his heirs & successors for ever that this my voluntary act & deed I doe hereby signifie by the affixing my hand & seale with this reservation that during my naturall life my son Joseph shall not allianate or dispose of any part of said land without my knowledge & approbation

Thirteen Acres and a half of upland and meadow be it more or less scituated lying and being in the west field belonging to Saybrooke Being bounded North ward with the land of the said James & Elizabeth FITZGERRALD, And Eastward with the land of Samuel COGSWELL & Nathaniell RUDD, and James & Elizabeth FITZGERRALD and bounded Southward and Westward with Oyster River with all the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining as more fully doth appear by a deed of sale under the hans and seals of James FITZGERRALD & Elizabeth FITZGERRALD his wife bearing date with this record as is above written.

Hannah BULL the daughter of John BULL was born at dunnington in the parish of Stow in the old in the County Glossester in England the 3d day of February: 1679.

Edward BULL the son of John BULL was born at dunnington in the parish & County aforesaid the 12th day of September Anno: 1682.

John BULL senor Bought of John BUSHNELL Two Acres and twenty rods of upland in the west field as abovesaid, upon which the said BULL's house now standeth Being bounded north ward with the highway or common. And Eastward with the land of the said John BUSHNELL. and Southward and westward with the highways lying within the thousand acres field.

To him the said BULL his heirs & assigns forever, quietly to possess and enjoy with all the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging as doth more fully appear by a deed of sale under the hand of the said BUSHNELL bearing date with this record.

It is agreed betwixt the said parties that for the twenty rods above mentioned the said BULL is to maintain a sufficient five rail fence or other fence equivilent betwixt them and the said BULL in so doing is freed from any outside fences that hath as for the present doth belong to the said two acres of land.

Say-Brooks Patent

Whereas the General Court of Connecticut have formerly granted unto the proprietors Inhabitants of the town of Say-brook all those lands both meadow and upland within these abutments upon the sea on the South & on Connecticut River on the east on the Bounds of Killingworth on the west & runs from the sea into the wilderness ten miles & abuts on the Boundaries of Haddam on the north & is in Breadth from Connecticut River next to Haddam Bounds about fower miles & the breadth by the sea is about six miles the said lands having been by purchase or otherwise lawfully obtayned of the Indians Native proprietors & whereas the proprietors the fore said Inhabitants of Saybrooke in the Colony of Connecticut have made application to the Governor & Company of the Colony of Connecticut Assembled in Court May 25th 1685, that they may have a patent for confirmation of the afore said land so purchased and granted to them as afore sayed & which they have stood seized & quietly possessed of for many years last past without Interruption, now for a more full confirmation of the aforwsayd Tract of land as it is bounded & butted aforesaid unto the present proprietors of the said Township of Say-brook In their possession & injoyment of the premises, [different pen and ink-for the which patent see Vol 2 page 166]

This Indenture made the six and Twentieth day of February in the Twelvth year of the Reigne of his Majestie William the third of England &c King &c:

Between Capt. John CHAPMAN of Haddam in the County of Hartford and Colony of Connecticut in New England on the one part: and Lieut. John CLARK of Saybrook in the County of New London and Colony aforesaid on the other part, Witnesseth: the said Capt. John CHAPMAN for and in Consideration of the sum of Thirty pounds in in hand Received by me the above s'd Capt. CHAPMAN of an from the said Lieut. John CLARKE the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and myself therewith fully satisfied Have given granted, bargained sold alienated and confirmed & by these presents do give grant bargain sell alienate and confirm unto the said Lieut John CLARK his heirs executors administrators and assigns a certaine tract and parcel of land lyeing and being in Saybrook aforesaid containing by estimation Seven acres and three quarters Bounded West on the highway that goes to the neck, north on the land of John KIRTLAND East on the land of the said Lieut John John CLARK and South on the land of Stephen POST. To Have and to hold all and singular the aforesaid bargained land woods underwoods privileges Commonages Benefits Rights members fences proprieties and privileges and appurtenances in any kind or manner whatsoever belonging appertaining to the said land unto the said Lieut John CLARK his heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever and that at and before the ensealing and delivery of this Instrument I the said John CHAPMAN do own and acknowledge to have in myselfe full right, power and lawful authority to sell alienate and dispose of the same and that the said land in every part and parcel thereof is free and clear from all other and former bargains gifts grants sails an all other Incumbrances whatsoever and I the said John CHAPMAN for me my heirs executors & administrators or assigns from the day of the date hereof will Warrant defend and maintain to the said Lieut. John CLARK his heirs executors administrators or assigns the said lands from all other claims and demands from all persons and persons whatsoever and I the said John CHAPMAN do by these presents, give deliver and surrender up full possession of all and every the aforesaid bargained premises to the said Lieut John CLARK. This Indenture made the nineteenth day of March in the Twelvth year of the reigne of our Sovereign Lord William the third King of England & Between Thomas DUNK of SayBrook in the County of New London and Colony of Connecticut in New England Tanner on the one part and Lieut. John CLARKE of Say-Brook in the County and Colony aforesaid Merc't one the other part. Witnesseth that the said Thomas DUNK for and in Consideration of the sum of fifteen pounds Ten Shillings in currant silver money of this Colony to me the said Thomas DUNK in hand paid and secured the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and of and from the same doe fully and clearly accquitt and discharge the said Lieut. John CLARKE his heirs executors administrators or assigns by these presents. Have bargained sold given granted alienated infeofed and confirmed and do by these present bargain sell give grant alienate Infeofe and confirm with the said Lieut. John CLARKE his heirs executors administrators and assigns a certaine track of land lying and being in the Township of Say-Brook aforesaid and at a certain place commonly called by the name of Patecunke Bounded North with the land of John PARKER senior south with the land of Nathaniell CHAPMAN West on the Country Road and East with the great River being by Computation Thirty acres be it more or less and all my right title and interest in and unto all those lands at Patecunke aforesaid be their acres more or less.

To Have and to hold all and singular the aforesaid bargained lands woods underwoods privileges Commonages benefitts Rights members proprieties and appurtenances in any kind or maner whatsoever belonging or appertaining in any manner or wise whatsoever, unto the said Lieut. John CLARKE his heirs and assigns for ever unto all and every the aforesaid bargained premises and that I the said Thomas DUNK have in myself free right power and lawfull authority to sell alienate and dispose of the same and that the same and every part and parcell thereof is free and clear from all other and former bargains sales gifts grants claims demands and Incumbrances whatsoever and I the said Thomas DUNK for me my heirs executors and administrators doe promise and engage to Warrant defend and maintain all and every the aforesaid bargained premises with all the appurtenances free and clear of all incumbrances claims and demands whatsoever form all person or persons whatsoever and I doe hereby render & give full possession seacin, and delivery of said lands and every part and parcell thereof to the said Lieut. Being four acres of upland lying and being in the field called the thousand acres and is bounded Northward, and eastward and southward with highway and westward with the land of the said James and Elizabeth FITZGERRALD with the priviledges and appurtenances thereunto belonging as more fully doth appear by a deed of sale given under the said James & Elizabeth FITZGERALD's hands and seals bearing date with this record, the day and year above written.

Also ffive acres of upland more Bought of said James and Elizabeth FITZGERRALD lying in the abovesaid field Bounded Northward partly (by the bound of the s'd James and Elizabeth FITZGERRALD) and partly by the highway that goeth through the said field into the common, and is bounded eastward by the land of the said John BULL senior bought of the said James & Elizabeth FITZGERRALD and bounded southward by the highway that goes through the aforesaid field towards the mill and is bounded westward partly by the land of the said John BULL seenior formerly bought of the said James & Elizabeth and partly by the land of the said James & Elizabeth with the priviledges and appurtenances thereunto belonging as more fully doth appear by a deed of sale given under the said James and Elizabeth theirs hands and seals bearing date the 16th of February 1691/2

The Lands of Robert LAY in Potapaug quarter laid out to him by & with the consent of the proprietors of the said quarter

Aprill 1672.

1.- Thirty nine acres (be it more or less) lying the west side of the highway over against his Common and with highways

2.- Fourty two acres more of upland (be it more or less) lying upon a point on the north side of the falls Cove Being bounded Northward with the boggie meadow of Lieut William PRATT and Eastward with the Cove, And bounded Westward with the common or highway that leadeth to eight mile meadow

3. Robert LAY bought of John FENNER all his right & title of land in a plain known by the name of scotch belonging to Say-brook. To Say all that parcel of land that was laid out in that Division to his brother William FENNER deceased, and to the said Robert LAY which the s'd Robert sold to his bro: William FENNER which land is bounded northward by the Common and eastward by the muddy river that runs down into the falls river leaving a highway for each proprietor to goe to his land where it may be convenient near to the boggie meadow and bounded Southward with the lands of the heirs of Lieut William PRATT, and bounded Westward also by the common near to the Cranberry pond with all the privileges & appurtenances thereunto belonging as more fully appears by a deed of sale under the John FENNER's hand and seal bearing date February ye 2d 1682.

Robert LAY's Deed of gift to his son [Robert LAY, Jr.]

To all Christian people to whom this present writting shall come, I Robert LAY senior of Saybrook in the County of New London and Colony of Connecticut send Greeting: in our Lord God everlasting: Know ye that I ye said Robert LAY senior as well for and in consideration of the natural affection and love which I have and bear unto my well beloved son Robert LAY junior of Say Brook as aforesaid as also for present especially moving Have given and granted and by these presents do give grant and confirm unto my said son Robert LAY junior my dwelling house and houseing and all my lands both upland & meadow both improved within fence and unimproved lands lying in common that now is or hereafter shall be laid out in Potapaug quarter or elsewhere belonging to Saybrook excepting what land I have by deed of gift given unto my grandson Robert LAY.

Also do give unto my said son as aforesaid (except what I have allready given to my son John TULLY his children) all my estate both in land and goods household stuff chattells & cattle and Debts whatsoever due unto me by bill or otherwise, as also the lands given unto me by Joshua the Indian Sachem.

To Have and to hold the aforesaid given and granted premises unto the said Robert LAY junior his heirs executors Administrators and assigns to his and their own proper uses and behoofs forever freely and quietly to possess and enjoy without any money or other thing whatsoever.

And further know ye that I the said Robert LAY senior have put the said Robert LAY junior in peacable and quiet possession of the aforesaid specified premises at the insealing and delivery hereof.

Know ye that I the said Robert LAY Senior as well for and in consideration of the natural affection and love which I have an bear unto my Grandson Robert LAY, as also for divers other good causes and considerations me at this present especially moving have given and granted and by these presents do give grant and confirme unto my said Grandson Robert a certain parcell of upland by estimation forty two acres (be it more or less) lying and being in Potapaug quarter belonging to Say-Brook. Being bounded Westward with the highway leading to eight mile meadow, and northward with the boggie meadow of the heirs of Lieut Willliam PRATT and eastward with the Cove, and Southward with the falls Cove.

As also a hundred pound right of meadow of boggs & upland in eight mile meadow bounded northward with the meadow of Simon LYNDE and John FENNER and eastward with the great river and Southward with his fathers meadow together with a fifty pound right in Commonage in Potapaug quarter.

To have and to hold the aforesaid given and granted premises unto the said Grandson Robert LAY his heirs executors and administrators and assigns to his and their own proper uses and behoofs forever freely and quietly to possess and enjoy without any money or other thing whatsoever.

The Lands of William PARKER junior given him many years before his fathers decease together with what lands his father William PARKER senior gave him the said William PARKER junior by his last will and testament bearing date 27th of July 1683.

Imprin's 1 To say all his lands both upland & meadow, houseing and barn orchard situate lying and being in Saybrook, at a place formerly called and known by the name of JACKSON's farme being by estimation Five and thirty acres of earable land beside swamp. Bounded northward with the highway that leadeth to the ferry And Eastward partly with the lands of Thomas NORTON and partly with the highway And bounded Southward also with the highway, and bounded Westward with the lands of John PARKER.

2- The meadow land given to the said William PARKER junior by the will of the said William PARKER senior deceased that belonged to the upland of the aforesaid farm lyeth in the meadow called or known by the name of the Ragged Rock meadow. Is bounded northward partly with John BUSHNELL's and partly with Joshua BUSHNELL and partly with Samuel WILLARD. And bounded Eastward partly with Mathew GRISWOLD Senior and partly with Abraham CHALKER and partly with the meadow that was William LORD's deceased. And bounded Southward with the meadow of John PARKER and the Cove and also partly with the meadow of Nicolas MARSON and also partly with the meadow of John CHAPMAN. And bounded Westward partly with the meadow of Zackariah SANFORD, and partly with the upland with all the priviledges and Immunities belonging unto the aforesaid lands as given according to the intent of the will unto the said William PARKER and his heirs forever except out of the aforesaid meadow land is given by the said William PARKER senior deceased to his son Joseph PARKER eleven acres and to his son David PARKER eight acres.

3-Also the said William PARKER deceased hath by will given unto his son William PARKER Twenty Acres of land at a place called PARKER's point in potopaug quarter belonging to Saybrook as also a fifty pound right in potopaug quarter And a hundred pound right in the town Commons, And a hundred pound right in the oxpasture.

4-And eleven acres and two third parts of an acre of land at Palaconke.

5-Also the said William PARKER deceased hath by his will given unto his son William PARKER a fourth part of the land given him by Joshua the Indian Sachem.

6.-And to his grandson William PARKER his son William's son Twenty acres of Woodland adjoining to the lands at PARKER's point.

CHAPMAN and ragged rock meadow easterly and northeast on Deacon DUDLEY's meadow which he bought of the Church of Saybrook know by the name of round hill meadow north on the land of William BUSHNELL and west and Westerly by South on lands of Nicholas MASON Lieut POST, Thomas NORTON and said William PARKER, To have and to hold all and singular the aforesaid lands woods underwoods swamps meadows contained within the said bounds, with all privileges Commonages benefits rights properties and appurtainances whatsoever unto the said William PARKER his heirs executors administrators or assigns to his and their sole and only use benefit and behoof for ever as more fully doth appear by a deed of sale given under the s'd CHAPMAN's hand and seale bearing date with this Record, and by him acknowledged to be his act and deed the day above written in the presence of two witnesses subscribed before

Being Five acres of upland, be it more or less with an orchard and one dwelling house scituated lying and being at Curbine point in potopauge quarter belonging to Saybrooke being bounded eastward with the great river, and southward by the line that divides the bounds between the town of Saybrooke and Potopauge quarter and is bounded westward by the lands of the said Deacon WILLIAM PARKER and northward partly by the meadow & partly by the Cove To have and to hold the said house orchard and five acres of land as is now fenced with the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining unto him the said Deacon PARKER his heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever as more fully appears by a deed of sale given under the said John COOK's his hand and seal bearing date with this record and by him acknowledged the day above written to be his act & deed before me
