Elisha S. ABERNETHY, was a son of General Russel ABERNETHY, of Torrington, born October 24, 1805. He entered Yale College when 16 years old and graduated in 1825. Admitted to the bar and practiced in Waterbury, removed to Torrington and afterwards to Bridgeport, where he was the Clerk of the Superior Court of Fairfield County from 1859 to the time of his death in 1869.

Andrew ADAMS, LL.D., born in Stratford in 1736, graduated Yale in 1760, settled in Litchfield. Rank of Colonel in the Revolutionary War, member of the Council of Safety two years, of State Council for nine years, member of the Continental Congress three years and Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1779 and 1780. Associate Judge of the Superior Court for four years and Chief Justice from 1793 until his death, 27 Nov 1797.

Elijah ADAMS, son of Chief Justice ADAMS, studied law with Judge REEVE, admitted to the bar 1795, practiced a few years in Litchfield, then moved to Geneava, NY.

Samuel ADAMS, native of Milford, CT, moved early to Stratford where he married Mary FAIRCHILD. Lawyer and Judge of the Fairfield Co. Court. Removed to Litchfield where he assisted his son, the Hon. Andrew ADAMS; d. 12 Nov 1788 in his 85th year. His widow died 29 Aug, 1803 in the 106th year of her age.

John Q. ADAMS, born in Cornwall, 2 Nov 1837, admitted to the bar 1864, located in West Cornwall where he practiced until April 1872. Removed to Negaunee, Michigan.

John ADAMS, b. 22 Jun 1785 in Canaan; admitted to the bar 1825. Involved in the iron industry at Woodville in the town of Washington, does not appear to have practiced law. Removed to Litchfield, then to Falls Village in the town of Canaan, where he d. about 1871.

J. Henry ADAMS, only son of John ADAMS, b. Woodville, town of Washington, 29 Dec 1822, graduated Yale 1842, admitted to the bar 1844. Removed to New York City.

John F. ADAMS, native of New Milford, CT, studied law with his uncle, John S. TURRILL, Esq., admitted to the bar 1882. Resides and practices in New Milford and is Judge of Probate for that district.

Edmond AIKEN admitted to the bar 1790 from Norfolk, CT. Practiced in that town and kept a general store; d. in 1807.

John ALLEN, buried in East Cemetery, Litchfield: "To the memory of John ALLEN, Esq., Many years during a life of eminent usefulness, highly distinguished for his integrity and patriotism as a member of the Council and Supreme Court of Errors of Connecticut, and no less distinguished during a period interesting and critical to his country as a member of the Congress of the United States. Born June 12, 1763. Died July 31, 1812. Aged 49 years."

Henry J. ALLEN, Sheriff 1884-1895. Born Manchester, CT, 26 May 1831. Removed to Litchfield Co. in 1859, engaged in the hotel business in village of Wolcottville until 1880. Elected sheriff in 1884 and held office until defeated in 1895. Died 9 Oct 1899.

Charles B. ANDREWS, LL.D., b. Sunderland, MA, in 1835. graduated Amherst College in 1858, admitted to the bar in Fairfield Co., in 1861 and began his practice in the town of Kent. Removed to Litchfield in 1863, and partnered with Hon. John H. HUBBARD. Elected Senator from the 15th Dist. in 1868 & 1869; House of Representatives in 1878; elected Governor of CT in 1879 for two years; Judge of the Superior Court in 1882 & Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1889, which office he resigned 1 Oct 1901. Member and presiding officer of the Constitutional Convention of 1902. Died in Litchfield, 2 Sep 1902.

Charles W. ANDREWS, only son & child of Judge Charles B. ANDREWS, b. 21 Nov 1874 in Litchfield. admitted to the bar 1902, located in Hartford.

Edward Warren ANDREWS, b. Jul 1811 in Windham, CT, son of Rev. William ANDREWS; attended Union College but did not graduated, admitted to the bar 1834. Gave up law, studied theology, and was settled in 1837 at the Congregational Church in West Hartford. About 1841 removed to New York, pastor of the Broadway Tabernacle Church, and afterwards, of the Presbyterian Church in Troy. Left the ministry & established a school in Cornwall, CT; then resumed the practice of law in New York City. A captain and later assistant adjutant general under General MORRIS at Ft. McHenry, Baltimore during the Civil War. After the war, practiced law in WV, then returned to NY. Died Sep 1895 at Chicago, IL.

Samuel James ANDREWS, son of Rev. William ANDREWS, b. July 1817, Danbury, CT. graduated Williams College, 1839; studied law in Hartford & Boston, admitted to the bar 1842, also in New York City, then removed to OH & admitted to the bar there. Left the practice of law in 1844, studied theology. Settled as pastor of the Congregational Church, East Windsor, CT< 1848; dismissed in 1855. Became an author & student. In 1868, took charge of the "Catholic Apostolic" congregation in Hartford. Died there October, 1906. Son James P. Andrews, presently reporter of the Supreme Court of Errors.

Curtiss B. ATWOOD, b. in Bethlehem, 1845. Educated at Stamford Academy, NY, & Brandon Seminary, VT. Studied law with Webster & O'neil in Waterbury & admitted to the bar in New Haven in 1879. Resides in Watertown, represented his town in the Legislature of 1905.

Roger AVERILL, b. Salisbury, 4 Aug 1809; graduated Union College, 1832; admitted to the bar 1834 & practiced in Salisbury until 1849. Removed to Danbury. Lt. Gov. of state during the Civil War. One of the organizers of the American Bar Association. Died, 9 Dec 1883 in Danbury.

Russell W. AYRES, of Waterbury, admitted 1869. graduated Yale, 1868, afterwards, at Harvard Law School. Founder of the Shore Resort at Woodmont, CT. Died 14 Dec 1873.

George H. BALDWIN, Sheriff 1869-1878. Born 20 Sep 1827, died in Litchfield, 2 Dec 1879. Son of Capt. Daniel BALDWIN. Published the Litchfield Republican & the Sentinel. Postmaster for 8 years, Judge of Probate for 1 year, represented town in General Assembly in 1861, town clerk for 5 years, & first selectman for several years.

Isaac BALDWIN, b. Milford, CT, 22 Feb 1715/16. His father removed to Durham and then to Litchfield. graduated Yale 1735, studied theology and was licensed to preach in 1737; never settled in a church. Married a daughter of Parson COLLINS, the eccentric minister of Litchfield, bought a farm and commenced farming. Represented the town in the Gen. Assembly 10 sessions & was town clerk 1742-1773. Clerk of the Litchfield District Probate Court for 29 years, 1st clerk of the County Court 1751-1793. Died in Litchfield 15 Jan 1805.

Luther T. BALL, b. Salisbury, studied law with Judge. D.J. WARNER & at Ballston, NY; admitted to the bar 1854. Removed to Illinois. In the Civil War he was an officer of the 84th Illinois regiment and was killed at the battle of Murfreesboro, Dec 1862, buried on the field.

Jesse BEACH, b. Litchfield, 1769. Studied law with Judge REEVE, admitted to the bar 1791. Married Sally WHEELER of Derby in 1792 and removed to that town, practicing law until 1801. Removed at that time to Redding, CT.

J. Gail BECKWITH, Jr., b. Litchfield, 1874; graduated Union College, 1896, studied Albany Law School & in the offices of Terry & Bronson and L.F. Burpee in Waterbury. Served as Corporal of Compnay A, 10th Battalion, !st New York Volunteers, Apr 1898 to Apr 1899. Admitted to Litchfield bar in 1899. Was deputy sheriff under Sheriff Middlebrook. Is now engaged in journalism.
Hezekiah BEECHER, b. in Bethlehem, son of Abraham BEECHER; admitted to the bar 1854, removed to, & was an early settler of, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Is now deceased.

Philemon BEECHER, b. 1775 in Kent, admitted to the bar 1800 as from Sharon. Removed to Lancaster, OH; later lived at Columbus and near Cincinnati & ended his career as Attorney General of the United States under General Jackson.

George W. BEERS, son of Hon. Seth P. BEERS, b. Litchfield, 18 Feb 1817. graduated Trinity College 1839, admitted to the bar 1842. Never practiced his profession, but was assistant to his father in the management of the School Fund in the Western Reserve of Ohio. Died in Litchfield.

Seth P. BEERS, b. Woodbury, 4 Jul 1781. Student at Litchfield Law School 1803-1805, practiced in Litchfield where he d. 9 Sep 1862. State's Attorney for the county 1820-1825, commissioner of the School Fund of Connecticut 1824-1849.
Frederick D. BEEMAN, native of Warren, graduated Yale 1842, admitted to the bar 1846, settled & practiced in Litchfield. Appointed clerk of the Superior Court in 1855 and held the position until his death 1 Aug 1860, age 38.

Charles O. BELDEN, b. Montecello, NY, 1827; admitted to practice 1848. Practiced in Litchfield, then removed to Milwaukee, WI. Lt. Col. of the 67th NY Volunteers in 1861 which he helped organize. His health failed after the war and he was unable to follow his profession. Died in Litchfield, 22 Nov 1870.

Charles BOSTWICK, b. New Milford, graduated Yale 1796, studied law under Judge REEVE of Litchfield. Practiced for a short time and went into commercial prusuits in NY. Later removed to Bridgeport, elected mayor 1840, and afterwards served as city judge.

Henry A. BOTSFORD, b. Watertown, 1821, d. Hartford, 14 Apr 1895. Sheriff from 1866 to 1869. Came to Litchfield from Salisbury where he had been deputy sheriff for ten years; about 1870 removed to Winsted, in 1872 removed to Hartford & engaged in the wholesale Chicago dressed beef business.

John BOYD, b. Winsted, 17 Mar 1799; graduated Yale 1821, admitted to the bar in New Haven Co., 1825, and to Litchfield bar in 1826. Representative in General Assembly, 1830 & 1835; County Commissioner, 1840, 1849, & 1850; state Senator, 1854 & Presiden pro tem; town clerk of Winchester about 30 years, d. 1881. Secretary of the State of CT, 1859, 1860 & 1861.

Abraham BRADLEY, Jr., b. Litchfield 1767; studied law with Judge REEVE, admitted to the bar 1791. Removed to the valley of the Wyoming, PA. Removed to Washington, D.C. where he was assistant postmaster general for nearly 40 years. He & his brother Phineas were the real organizers of the post office department of the United States.

Albert P. BRADSTREET, b. Thomaston 1846, graduated Yale 1871, Columbia Law School in 1873. Was admitted to the bar 1874 & practiced in Thomaston. Member of the General Assembly in 1872-78; elected to the Senate in 1881 & 1882. Town clerk of Thomaston from 1875 to 1891, Judge of Probate from 1872 to 1890. In 1879 appointed deputy judge of the Waterbury district and in 1883 elected Judge of the same court, re-elected in 1887 & 1893. Now in business in New York City.

Nelson BREWSTER, admitted from Cornwall in 1824; resided in Goshen and had a very limited practice. Died in 1850.

James T. BREEN, admitted from Winsted in 1881, located in the west.

Daniel X. BRINSMADE, b. Washington, 1750, son of Rev. Daniel BRINSMADE, 2nd pastor of the Society of Judea, afterwards the town of Washington. graduated Yale 1772, read law at Sharon, admitted to the bar and settled in his native town where he practiced for more than 50 years. In 1787, delegate to the convention at Hartford that ratified the Constitution of the United States. Justice of the quorum and assistant judge of the County Court for 16 years. Represented his town in the Legislature during 43 session and was one session clerk of the House of Representatives. He d. 1826.

Clifford E. BRISTOL, admitted to the bar 1882, began practice at Norfolk & then removed to Plainville. Now resides in Winsted and is engaged in the mercantile business.

Bennett BRONSON, graduated Yale 1797, admitted to the bar 1802 as of Southbury. Born 14 Nov 1775 in Waterbury. Became prominent in that town as a lawyer & banker, d. there 11 Dec 1850.

Samuel BROWNSON, early settler of New Milford and town clerk from 1714 - 1733. Was its 1st justice of the peace & also Judge of the New Haven Co. Court. Died in 1733.

Roger BROWNSON, brother of Samuel, succeeded him as town clerk in New Milford and was justice of peace there for a number of years. Died in 1758.

Norton J. BUEL, b. Salisbury, 13 Sep 1813; studied law with General Sedgwick & Judge Seymour, admitted to the bar 1834. Removed to New Haven Co., d. there 6 May 1864.

Epaphrus W. BULL, b. Danbury, 1805; admitted to the bar 1825. Went South in 1830 and was reported to have been killed by Indians in Texas in its war of 1840.

William BURKE, b. Ireland 1820, came to America 1838, settled in New Milford, earning his living by shoemaking, studied for the law and admitted to the bar 1868. Removed to Danbury, 1869 - resided there until his death in 1890.

William M. BURRALL, native of Canaan, admitted to the bar 1808. Associate Judge of the County Court 1829-1836, afterwards presiding Judge for 2 years. Died in Cannan in 1855, aged 77 years.

William Porter BURRALL, son of Hon. Wm. M. BURRALL, b. Canaan, 18 Sep 1806. graduated Yale, attended Litchfield Law School, admitted to the bar April 1829. Practiced law in Canaan, removed to Bridgeport, CT, Oct. 1838 & assumed presidency of Housatonic Railroad Co. which office he held until 1853. Later connected with the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Co., and treasure & president of the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1862, Vice President of the Hartford & New Haven Railroad, made president in 1868. Vice President of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad until his death 3 Mar 1874.

John CANFIELD, Jr., b. Lyme, CT, 1767, removed with father when young to Salisbury; studied law with Col. STRONG & at Litchfield Law School, admitted to the bar 1786. Located & practiced in Salisbury until he d. 1803.

Judson CANFIELD, b. New Milford, 24 Jan 1759, graduated Yale 1782; admitted to the bar 1785, located & practiced in Sharon. Held official positions & was one of judges of County Court. He was one of the purchasers of the School Lands in OH, and the county seat of Mahoning Co. was named after him. Died in New York City 5 February 1840.

Judge GRANGER was a Democrat in his political views, represented his town in the General Assembly in 1867; in 1868, state senator & chairman of the Judiciary Committee, appointed a Judge of the Superior Curt. In 1876, advanced to the Supreme Court of Errors where he held office until 1887, resigned to accept an election to Congress. In 1893, appointed State Referee.

Bar & Law Library Association. Judge of the Probate District of Woodbury, elected in 1861, and held office over 40 years. In 1874, appointed State's Attorney for Litchfield Co., holding office until 1896. Member of the Commission of State Police. Was a democrat in politics, serving in the legislature in 1874-5, senator in 1877-8, candidate for Secretary of State in 1804. Married 6 Jan 1863 to Rebecca Huntley HURD of Honesdale, PA, who d. 28 Feb 1865, leaving one daughter, Rebecca. On 11 Jun 1868, he m. Helen Elizabeth PARKER of Woodbury, who survived him, together with two daughters, Rebecca HUNTINGTON, & Eunice [HUNTINGTON] TOMLINSON, & one grandson, Jame Huntington TOMLISON.

Samuel PETTIBONE, first King's Attorney of Litchfield; b. Simsbury 26 Jul 1798 [sic]; began practice of law as early as 1730; removed to Goshen prior to 1740 & was active in the formation of the County in 1751. Upon establishment of the County Court he was appointed King's, or as we now term it, State's Attorney, which office he held for several years. Prominent in the town affairs of Goshen & represented the town in the General Assembly a number of times. Died in 1787.

Orvil Hitchcock PLATT, admitted to the bar 1850; b. Washington, CT, & his early life was that of a hardworking farmboy, both parents being of good New England stock. Beginning in the old red school house, and afterward atteneding the Academy, in which he later taught, he was still further furnished, by close and persistent study at home. Entered the offices of Gideon HOLLISTER & Fred. BEEMAN in Litchfield in 1848 & in due time was admitted to the bar. Began his practice in Towanda, PA, but returned to CT & settled at Meriden. In 1855, was Cleark of the Connecticut Senate & in 1857, Secretary of State. Repeatedly elected to represent his town in the General Assembly, served in the Senate in 1861-2, & in the House of Representatives in 1864 & 1869. In 1877, appointed State Attorney for New Haven Co.; in 1879, chosen U.S. Senator by the General Assembly, a position he retained until his death at his summer residence in Washington, CT, 21 Apr 1905. Served on the committees for Patents, Indian Affairs, Territories, Finance, Cuban Relations, & Judiciary. Author of the Platt Amendment, that great bulwark and mainstay of the Cuban Republic against foes, foreign & domestic; presided over the Senate as a Court of Impeachment in the case of Judge Swain; member of the Republican party.

William L. RANSOM, b. Granville, MA, 28 Mar 1822; studied law with Judge Hiram GOODWIN of Riverton, admitted to the bar 1854. Three years later, he came to Litchfield & associated with Hon. John H. HUBBARD until 1859, when he was appointed Clerk of Superior & Supreme Courts of Litchfield Co., held that position until his resignation in 1887. He now resides in Litchfield.

John REED, undoubtedly the earliest attorney in the territory embraced in Litchfield Co.; graduated Cambridge in 1697, entered the ministry & preached at Waterbury, Stratford & other places. Became interested in the Stratford colony of settlers who went to the region now called New Milford, and obtained a large tract of land now the center of that town, where he built a residence near the present Ingleside School where he resided and held religious services at his hours. In 1708, he was admitted as an attorney by the General Court & in 1712 he was appointed Queen's Attorney for the Colony. Sued Milford settlers who claimed superior title to New Milford over the Stratford title & occupied some of the 26,000 acres; he won 15 trials but lost the 16th; removed to Redding where he resided until 1722, when he went to Boston & soon became the most eminent lawyer in the colonies. He was Attorney General for several years, & a member of the Governor & Council. He was known there as "Leather Jacket John". He married Ruth TALCOTT, daughter of Col. John TALCOTT of Hartford & sister of Governor Joseph TALCOTT. One of his sons was the celebrated Col. John REED of the "Lonetown Manor", Redding, CT. He died in 1749, leaving a large estate.

Henry Seymour SANFORD, d. in his home in New Milford, Saturday, 2 Nov 1901, age 69; son of the late Judge David C. SANFORD & of Amelia S. [SEYMOUR] SANFORD; b. Norwalk, CT, 1 Mar 1832. Graduated Yale 1852; spent 2 yrs at the Harvard Law School. After his admission to the Bar, spent one year in Washington, D.C., as private secretary for Ex-Judge SEYMOUR, then a member of Congress. Returning to New Milford, he joined his father's law practice and continued it after his father's elevation to the bench. At age 29, he had a serious accident that disabled him for life, but he continued his practice from a wheelchair. He moved to Bridgeport in 1869 and practiced there for 30 years; before his death, he donated his law library to the Litchfield Co. Bar.

Charles F. SEDGWICK, b. Cornwall, Litchfield Co., 1 Sep 1795; grandson of Gen. John SEDGWICK, major in the Revolutionary Army & major-general of the State Militia. His ancestory is traced to Robert SEDGWICK, one of Cromwell's generals; he was a brother of the late Albert SEDGWICK & a cousin of Gen. John SEDGWICK of the 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. graduated Williams College, 1813; took charge of an academy in Sharon, CT, and at the same time studied law; admitted to the bar March 1820; located in Sharon & there continued the practice of law. Married Betsy, dau. of Judge Cyrus SWAN of Sharon, 15 Oct 1821. Was early a member of the Legislature in both branches, a Judge of the Court of Probate for the District of Sharon, & from 1856 to 1874 States Attorney for the county. He was appointed Brigadier General of the State Militia in 1829, afterwards Major General of the 3rd Military Division of the State. He died in communion with the Congregational Church at Sharon, 9 May 1882, in his 87th year.

Edward Woodruff SEYMOUR, Judge of the Supreme Court of CT., d. Litchfield, 16 Oct 1892; b. at Litchfield, 30 Aug 1832, eldest son of Chief Justice Origen S. SEYMOUR, his mother was a sister of George C. WOODRUFF, Esq. of Litchfield & Judge Lewis B. WOODRUFF of NY. He graduated Yale 1853, admitted to the bar 1856, practiced in Litchfield until 1875, when he removed to Bridgeport & formed a partnership with his younger brother, Morris W. SEYMOUR, with whom he associated until 1889 when he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Errors. Represented Litchfield in the State Legislature in 1859-60-70-71, & was a member of the State Senate in 1876. Represented his district in Congress from 1882-1886; one of the representatives of the diocese of CT in the general conventions of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the U.S.
Moses SEYMOUR, Jr., b. Litchfield 30 Jun 1774; held office of Sheriff from 1819 to 1825. He gave little personal attention to it being actively engaged in business and deputized his brother Ozias to attend to the Court duties; he was for a while Postmaster of Litchfield; gave the land on which the court house is now located to the County to be used only for County purposes; he was a large landholder and engaged largely in the exchange & sale of real estate. He d. 8 May 1826 in Litchfield.

Origen S. SEYMOUR, b. Litchfield, 9 Feb 1804; graduated Yale 1824; admitted to the bar 1826 & located in his native town where he resided until his death, 12 Aug 1881. He frequently represented the town in the GenAssy & was elected Speaker of the House in 1850. In 1851, he was elected to Congress & again in 1853. In 1855, elected one of the Judges of the Superior Court, which office he held for 8 yrs; in 1864 & 1865 he was nominated for Governor by the Democratic party. In 1870, elected Judge of the Supreme Court of Errors & in 1873 was its Chief Justice; retired in 1874 and then engaged as a referee. Presided over the Commision which prepared the new code practice adopted by the Legislature in 1879. He received the degree of L.L.D. from Trinity College in 1866 & from Yale in 1873. He was a cousin of Horatio SEYMOUR of NY, a relative of Ex-Governor Thomas H. SEYMOUR of CT, & had two sons who became lawyers: Morris W. SEYMOUR of Bridgeport & Edward W. SEYMOUR of Litchfield; another son, Rev. Storrs O. SEYMOUR was a Episcopal clergyman in Litchfield. In politics, Judge SEYMOUR was a Democrat.

Morris W. SEYMOUR, son of the late Chief Justice Origen S. SEYMOUR & brother of the late Supreme Court Judge, Edward W. SEYMOUR, b. in Litchfield in 1842; graduated Yale 1866; graduated Columbia Law School in 1968 & admitted to the bar. He began practice in Bridgeport & was elected successively city clerk, city attorney & corporation counsel. In 1881 & 1882, he was a member of the State Senate & was instrumental in establishing the State Board of Pardons of which he was a member; lecturer on law at Yale; his summer residence is at the old homestead in Litchfield.

He was a justice of the quorum for 25 yrs, Judge of Litchfield County Court for 5 yrs from 1786; for 16 yrs, Probate Clerk for the district of Woodbury, & Judge of that district for 37 yrs. Joseph L. SMITH; b. New Britain, CT, 28 May 1776; located in Litchfield about 1802 where he practiced until the War of 1812; married one of Ephriam KIRBY's daughters. In consequence of the active part he took in the 6th of August Festival 1806, he lost most of his practice. He was appointed by the administration a Major in the War of 1812, remaining in service until 1818 when he removed to Florida. From 1823 to 1827 he was a Judge of the U.S. District Court for Florida. He died at St. Augustine, 24 May 1846. General Ephraim Kirby SMITH, who was the last Confederate General to surrender his command was a descendant.

Junius SMITH, son of Gen. David SMITH & brother of Aaron SMITH, b. Plymouth, 2 Oct 1780; graduated Yale 1802, then attended Litchfield Law School & admitted to the bar, beginning his practice in New Haven, but soon became interested in Mercantile business which necessitated his removal in 1805 to London, England and which he was engaged until about 1832. He chartered a trial ocean going steam vessel which made the crossing from Cork to New York in 19 days, starting on 4 Apr 1838. Having proved the concept, a company was formed & a new steamship, the British Queen, was built. Smith received many honors including an L.L.D. from Yale. He removed to South Carolina where he purchased a plantation and began the culture of tea in the U.S.

From 1849 to 1854, he was a member of the U.S. Senate; he resigned and opened an office in New York City & continued practice there until 16 May 1871. President LINCOLN appointed him Judge on the part of the U.S. of the Mixed Court at NY, established uder the treaty of 7 Apr 1862 with Great Britain & he held that position until the aborgation of the treaty in 1870.

Litchfield (South Farms) 19 Jun 1809; prepared for college at Morris Academy, graduated Yale 1830 with high honors, entered Litchfield Law School & admitted to the bar 1832. Later that year removed to New York City, and after a successful practice, in 1850 he was elevated to the Bench where he was successively Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, Superior Court, Court of Appeals, & U.S. Circuit Court for the Second Judicial Circuit. He maintained a residence in Litchfield & died there 10 Sep 1875. He married a daughter of Chief Justice HORNBLOWER of NJ, all three of his sons, Charles H., Lewis B. & Frederick S., are members of the Bar.

Morris WOODRUFF, b. Litchfield 1777, d. 1841; Judge of the County Court & a Major General of the State Militia; father of George C. & Lewis B. WOODRUFF, his only daughter was the wife of Chief Justice SEYMOUR.

Pitkin Cowles WRIGHT, b. Canaan, May 1835; graduated Williams 1852, admitted to the bar in 1855; he removed to Iowa. He was Grand High Priest of Iowas 1868-9; d. Somerville, TN, 15 Sep 1896.

John F. WYNNE, b. Sandisfield, MA, 1860; admitted to the bar in 1881; settled at Unionville in the town of Farmington, representing that town in the Legislature in 1886; subsequently removed to New Haven where he is now in practice.

John D. YALE, Sheriff of the County 1878-1881; b. Canaan 1826; at the close of his term of office, he resided in Winsted & was employed as a commercial traveler; he removed to Hartford & retired; d. in Hartford 24 Apr 1905.
